this past week (and weekend) maya's class put on their much-anticipated first grade play at our waldorf school. their play was written by their devoted and amazingly gifted teacher and it was his interpretation of the greatly loved grimm's fairy tale - the bremen town musicians. the children did a total of four performances for both the school and the parents, with two different casts (for two of the performances, half of the class were the characters in the play and the other half were the villagers and vice-versa for the other two performances). maya was one of the two black cats in her character performances and a farmer/villager in the others (i was fortunate to be one of the parents helping with costumes). as is the tradition in most waldorf schools, the first and second grade plays (each grade performs one play per year) are recited by the entire class...with no specific lines given to any individual child - however, the characters do move about and act out their rehearsed scenes. my, how the children worked hard on their recitation and movements and they did such a fantastic job. it was truly a joy and an honor to see them come together as a group and perform this lovely play!
