maya recently, and very proudly, completed her first knitting project at school - this very sweet little knitted chick...
she has actually been knitting for about a year (she learned rather serendipitously from her cousin during christmas break last year)...but it has been something rather transforming and special for her to be knitting in a group with her classmates (using wooden knitting needles they made by hand), each working on the same project together. she was overjoyed to be able to bring home this special little chick and he now sits in a very honored spot atop our dresser. in fact, she has already begun her second knitting project at school - a baby bunting.
coincidentally, the day she brought home her little chick...she proceeded to ask me a few questions about knitting, specifically if i could teach her how to change yarn colors while knitting. and so, i showed her just how easy it was to change colors...and she immediately set off to work on a very special knitting project at home - a rainbow purse!
i am thrilled that she is learning handwork at this young age. and even more thrilled that we have the opportunity to knit together!

during the after-christmas calm this week, i actually finished two more gnome hats...
and i have another one already on the needles...
i also cast on for an easy slouchy hat for wesley. he's been wanting a slouchy hat and after seeing the monochromatic green felted purse i just finished, he wanted me to knit him a hat in the same colors...
also i wanted to include in this week's projects a rainbow pilot cap that i knit some time ago, but somehow failed to get a photo of it...
lastly, i cast on for another little felted purse using my felted iphone purse pattern. my plan is to embellish this one with a little knitted/felted flower of some sort...
as for a yarn update, this week i made it to a fabulous post-christmas yarn sale at a local yarn store and came home with these lovelies:
manos del uruguay maxima, in keylime...
in chrysanthemum...
in aqua...
and in currant...
louisa harding grace handdyed, in oriental...
and in pumpkin...

at the last minute, i decided to make these three little felted purses for my sister and her two girls for christmas (using my new felted iphone purse pattern) - each in a different monochromatic colorway...
i chose four different hues of malabrigo merino worsted for each of the three color groups i wanted...
and i'm quite thrilled with the way they turned out (fortunately, so are the recipients)!
there's nothing quite as rewarding as giving something handmade to loved ones - especially when it's from your own pattern. :-)
